R591 headed north towards Bloomington, IN. Note the unusal Monon signal post at the grade crossing. This type of signal was a unique fail-safe type of warning for motorists. When the light was "on" shining green, no trains would be near so you could safely cross the tracks. If the light was "OFF", then watch out, a train may be near! The system was fail safe in that if the power went out, motorists would still be on the lookout for a train. This signal here was one of the very last on the line, and may indeed have been the last to operate as this segment of track was abandoned 2 years after this photo was taken.
